Keeping it alive

Oil and cooling — the systems that stop it destroying itself. ~4 min

Everything so far has been about making power. This lesson is about the two systems that stop the engine murdering itself in the process: oil, which keeps metal from ever really touching metal, and cooling, which carries away the roughly two-thirds of the fuel's energy that becomes heat instead of motion. Neither adds a single horsepower. Without either, the engine lasts minutes.

Oil: the film that does everything

A crankshaft spinning at 6,000 rpm never actually touches its bearings. It surfs on a pressurised film of oil a few hundredths of a millimetre thick — hydrodynamic lubrication, the same physics as aquaplaning, deliberately harnessed. The oil pump forces oil through drillings in the block and even through the crankshaft itself to feed every bearing; lose oil pressure and metal meets metal within seconds, which is why the red oil-can light is the one warning you never drive through.

Oil also does four other jobs while it is there: it cools the parts coolant cannot reach (pistons get an oil squirt from below), cleans (carrying combustion soot to the filter), seals (helping the rings hold pressure), and protects against acids formed in combustion. The "W" grades on the bottle (5W-30) describe viscosity when winter-cold and at full temperature — an engineered compromise between flowing instantly at start-up and staying tough at 120 °C.

Cooling: managing a controlled fire

Combustion is ~2,000 °C; aluminium melts at 660. The engine survives because heat is drained away exactly as fast as it arrives: coolant circulates through passages cast around the cylinders and head, carries the heat to the radiator, and the airflow of driving dumps it to the atmosphere. The water pump keeps the loop moving; the fan covers traffic jams.

The subtlety is that an engine wants to run hot — around 90 °C — where clearances are right, oil flows properly and fuel burns clean. Cold engines wear fastest (rich mixtures wash oil off cylinder walls; most engine wear happens in the first minutes after start-up). So the thermostat blocks coolant from the radiator entirely until the engine warms, then modulates to hold the target. The cooling system's real job is not to make the engine cold — it is to hold it at exactly the right hot.
