The cockpit
The steering wheel is a keyboard — and the driver is part of the machine. ~5 min
The last system on the car is the one the sport is actually about: the human. The cockpit is where an 800 kg, 1000-horsepower instrument meets a nervous system — and everything in it is designed around a brutal constraint: at racing speeds, the driver has no attention to spare. Every control must be reachable without moving the hands from the wheel, readable without looking, and impossible to confuse at 5g.
The steering wheel
An F1 steering wheel costs more than most cars (~£70,000) and does more: upshift and downshift paddles, the clutch paddles for launch, the DRS button from lesson 8, the overtake button that spends the hybrid budget from lesson 3, the brake-balance and differential dials from lessons 9 and 4, engine-mode rotaries, radio, pit-lane limiter — 25+ controls and a screen showing whatever the driver needs this second: revs, delta time, tyre temperatures, flags.
Notice something about that list: nearly every dial is a lesson from this course. The wheel is where the whole car surfaces as decisions — brake balance forward for the next chicane, differential more open for the hairpin, battery to overtake mode for the straight. Drivers adjust these every few corners, mid-conversation with the pit wall, while placing the car within centimetres at 300 km/h. Build your own and see how quickly the buttons make sense:
The driver
The seat is moulded to the individual body; the pedals are set for a driver who lies more than sits, feet up near the front axle line. The physical load is real engineering data: neck muscles fighting ~25 kg of lateral head load in fast corners, a heart rate averaging 160–180 bpm for two hours, and in hot races several kilograms lost to sweat inside a fireproof three-layer suit. Drivers train necks the way sprinters train legs, because a tiring neck literally blurs their vision in long corners.
One machine, one system
This closes the tour: power unit and hybrid make the energy; gearbox and tyres spend it; wings and floor let the tyres spend more of it; brakes and suspension manage its violence; the chassis keeps its human alive; and the cockpit hands the whole thing to a brain running on instinct and 25 buttons. No part works alone — the wing loads the tyre, the tyre demands the suspension, the suspension defends the floor, the floor feeds the wing. That interconnection is what the final exam will test: not trivia, but whether you can see the car as one system. Go get it.
