The front wing
The first thing the air meets — and the start of the whole aero story. ~5 min
The front wing is the first part of the car to meet the air, and that makes it the most influential aerodynamic surface on the machine — not because of the downforce it makes itself (though ~25% of the car's total is nothing to sniff at), but because every other surface receives the air the front wing has already shaped. Get the front wing wrong and the floor, sidepods and rear wing are all working with spoiled material.
An upside-down wing
Each side of the wing is a stack of up to four elements — curved profiles exactly like aircraft wings, mounted upside down. Air travelling under the wing is squeezed and accelerated; fast air is low-pressure air, so the wing is sucked towards the road. Stacking several elements with slots between them lets the whole assembly turn the air far harder than one profile could without the flow tearing away (stalling). Managing the air
Just behind the wing sit two of the worst aerodynamic objects imaginable: rotating, open wheels. A spinning tyre churns the air into a fat, turbulent wake, and if that mess washes under the car it poisons the floor — which, as the next lesson shows, is where most of the downforce lives. So the modern front wing is really a flow-management device: its endplates and the shaped tips of its elements deliberately steer air around the front tyre (engineers call it outwash), sacrificing some of the wing's own downforce to deliver clean air to everything downstream.
This is also why front wings look so different between rule eras: the 2022+ regulations deliberately simplified endplates to limit outwash, because the intricate pre-2022 wings threw so much turbulence sideways that following another car closely became nearly impossible — and racing suffered.
The balance tool
The wing's flap angle is mechanically adjustable in the pits — a few degrees of flap is the standard fix for a driver reporting understeer (front washing wide: add front wing) or oversteer (rear stepping out: reduce it). It is the coarse balance knob of the whole car. And because it hangs just centimetres above the tarmac at 300 km/h, it is also the part most often seen exploding into carbon confetti at first-corner contact — losing a front wing means losing a quarter of the car's front grip, and the car becomes nearly undriveable until it is replaced.
