The elliptical wing that fought the Battle of Britain — beauty with a physical justification.

· THE STORY
The Spitfire is probably the most famous fighter ever built, and its trademark is the graceful elliptical wing. The shape wasn’t styling: an elliptical wing wastes the least energy making lift, and it was also thin enough for speed yet deep enough to hide the guns and landing gear. Mated to the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it could grow in power year after year and stay competitive through the entire war.
· WHY IT MATTERED
Aerodynamic theory says the lift along a wing should taper like an ellipse to minimise induced drag — the energy lost stirring the air. Supermarine built the theory literally, and the demo below shows exactly what the shape buys.
· WHY IT MATTERED
At only 13% thickness the wing was unusually thin for its day, delaying compressibility trouble and giving the Spitfire its speed and high-Mach dive capability. The elliptical planform provided the internal depth to pull that off while still swallowing eight machine guns and the undercarriage.

The airframe absorbed a doubling of engine power across the war — from 1 030 hp early Merlins to 2 000+ hp Griffons — through 24 marks. Its top speed rose by over 100 km/h while rivals were retired; few designs have ever had that much stretch.
· WHY IT MATTERED
A perfectly elliptical wing stalls everywhere at once — vicious with no warning. The Spitfire’s designers twisted the wingtips slightly (washout) so the roots stalled first, shaking the stick as a warning while the ailerons kept working. Pilots could fly to the very edge of the turn and trust the aircraft.

Morph the planform from a blunt rectangle to the Spitfire’s ellipse. The curve shows how the lift is spread along the span against the ideal, and the readout prices the difference in induced drag — energy a fighter pays for with turn rate and climb.
Induced drag is the price of making lift, and it is what a fighter feels in a sustained turn, where CL is high. A few percent less of it is climb rate and turn radius the other aircraft doesn’t have. The catch — an ellipse stalls all at once — was tamed with washout at the tips.
