· THE STORY
The SR-71 flew reconnaissance at over three times the speed of sound and 26 kilometres up, faster and higher than any interceptor or missile of its day — its documented evasion manoeuvre was simply to accelerate. Nothing has flown faster on jet engines since it retired. At that speed the airframe grew several hundred degrees hot, so nearly the whole aircraft is titanium.
· WHY IT MATTERED
Dashing to Mach 3 is one thing; cruising there for an hour is a materials problem. Skin temperatures passed 300 °C, so the Blackbird was 92% titanium, its fuel was a coolant, and its panels were built loose to grow into place — it famously wept fuel on the ramp until the airframe heated up and sealed.
· WHY IT MATTERED
At Mach 3.2 the J58’s inlet spike and afterburner produce most of the thrust while the turbojet core is nearly idle — bleed tubes carry compressor air around the hot section straight into the afterburner. One engine behaves like a turbojet at take-off and a ramjet at cruise. The demo below lets you fly that handover.
· WHY IT MATTERED
Roughly 4 000 missiles were fired at Blackbirds over 25 years of operations; none hit. Speed, altitude and early radar-shaping (its chined body was a stealth precursor) made it effectively immune — reconnaissance by pure performance.
