· THE STORY
The F2004 is the high-water mark of the naturally aspirated era: a three-litre V10 revving to nearly 19 000 rpm — a shriek you could hear across a city — in a car refined surface by surface in the wind tunnel for years. It won 15 of 18 races in 2004, and its lap records at some circuits survived into the 2020s against far more powerful hybrid cars.
· WHY IT MATTERED
With engine size fixed at 3.0 litres and turbos banned, the only road to power was speed: burn the same air more often per second. Power is torque times revs — the demo shows how chasing rpm carried the V10s past 900 hp with no help from pressure.
· WHY IT MATTERED
At 19 000 rpm each piston reverses direction over 600 times a second, pulling accelerations near 10 000 g. Valve springs gave way to pneumatic ones; piston speed became the hard wall the demo runs you into. The rev ceiling was set by materials, not rules.
· WHY IT MATTERED
Nothing about the F2004 was a single trick — it was thousands of wind-tunnel hours, a gearbox that shifted in 30 milliseconds, and reliability so absolute Schumacher finished every race of 2002–04 bar one — and that one was a crash, not a breakage. Dominance by accumulation, the model every top team has chased since.

Power is torque times engine speed, so with size capped the V10s chased revolutions. Sweep the rpm along the F2004’s curve and watch the power climb — and watch the mean piston speed close in on the material limit that finally capped the era.
P = τ·ω: a 3-litre engine’s torque is fixed by its size, so the era’s entire power race happened on the ω axis. Ten small cylinders, a stroke barely 41 mm, pneumatic valve springs — everything served revolutions, until the pistons themselves said no.
