Gearbox & differential
Eight gears, shifts faster than a blink, and a differential that corners. ~5 min
An engine that only works properly between 10,000 and 15,000 rpm has a problem: the car needs to do everything from crawling out of the pit lane to 350 km/h. The gearbox is the translator — eight forward ratios that keep the engine in its narrow happy band whatever the road speed. In one lap of a typical circuit a driver shifts gear around 50–60 times; over a race, thousands.
The seamless shift
A road manual takes maybe half a second per shift — clutch in, move lever, clutch out — and during that time no power reaches the wheels. Multiply half a second by three thousand race shifts and you have lost minutes. F1's answer is the seamless-shift gearbox: two sets of engagement mechanisms are interleaved so the next gear is physically engaged while the current one is still driving. Drive hands over from one gear to the next in a few milliseconds, with no interruption you could measure from the outside — a continuous shove punctuated only by the bark of the engine changing note.
The driver never touches a clutch pedal after the start (there isn't one — the clutch is a paddle on the wheel, used for launches and pit stops). Shifts are requested with finger paddles and executed hydraulically, and the electronics blip or cut the engine with a precision no human foot could match.
The differential
In any corner the outside wheels travel further than the inside ones, so the two rear wheels must be allowed to spin at different speeds — that is the differential's basic job, the same as in every road car. But F1 uses a computer-controlled limited-slip differential, because how firmly the two wheels are tied together changes the car's personality mid-corner: locked more, the car is stable but reluctant to turn; freed more, it turns eagerly but gets nervous on exit when 1000 horsepower wants to spin the inside wheel. Drivers adjust this balance corner by corner from a dial on the steering wheel.
Gearbox as structure
Like the engine, the gearbox is structural. Its case — machined or moulded as one piece in titanium or carbon — bolts to the back of the engine and the rear suspension bolts to the gearbox. Engine and gearbox together ARE the rear half of the car: there is no chassis behind the driver's fuel tank, just powertrain with suspension hanging off it. That is why a gearbox change means dismantling half the car, and why the rules make gearboxes last multiple races.
