Hybrid power
The MGU-K, the battery, and the extra 160 horsepower of electricity. ~5 min
Watch a Formula 1 car brake from 320 km/h for a hairpin. In those two seconds it sheds enough energy to power a house for hours — and until 2009, every joule of it was thrown away as heat. The hybrid system exists because engineers looked at that bonfire and thought: we could keep some of that.
The MGU-K
Bolted to the engine's crankshaft is the MGU-K — Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic. It is one machine with two personalities. Under braking it runs as a generator: the wheels drive it, it resists (adding to the braking), and it pumps charge into the battery. On the way out of the corner it flips to being a motor: the battery empties back through it, adding up to 120 kW — about 160 horsepower — on top of the petrol engine's shove.
The rules ration the flow: roughly 2 megajoules may be recovered into the battery per lap, and about 4 MJ may be spent from it. So the electric boost is not a constant — it is a budget, and spending it well is a skill. Deploy on the long straight where an extra 160 bhp buys the most metres; harvest in the braking zones where the energy was going to be wasted anyway.
The battery
The energy store is a lithium-ion battery pack of regulated weight (20–25 kg), sitting low under the fuel cell. Its life is nothing like a phone's: it is stabbed with megawatt-scale charge and discharge pulses every few seconds for two hours, so its cooling and management electronics matter as much as its chemistry.
Until 2025 there was a second recovery machine, the MGU-H, which harvested energy from the turbocharger's shaft — elegant, wildly expensive, and dropped from the 2026 rules in exchange for a much bigger MGU-K. The direction of travel is clear: the electric share of F1 power keeps growing, because the braking-zone bonfire is still the biggest free energy source on the car.
Deployment strategy
Because the budget is finite, deployment is programmed into engine modes: qualifying modes that drain the battery for one lap, race modes that balance harvest and spend, overtake buttons that gamble the reserve on one move. When you hear "he's out of battery" on the radio, it means exactly what it says — the car is 160 horsepower poorer until the next few braking zones refill it. The next time you watch a defending driver suddenly become easy prey at the end of a straight, you are watching an empty battery, not a tired engine.
