Lights out and away we go.

Five red lights, one second apart. Then a pause nobody can time. The race starts the instant they all go out — and the absence is the only signal you get.

The real procedure

Five pairs of red lights light one pair at a time, a second apart. Once all five are lit they hold for a randomised interval, and the race begins when they all go out together. There is no green light and no countdown — which is why anticipating is so tempting, and why moving early is a penalty.

The FIA hold is 0.2–3.0 s. These games use 0.7–3.0: at two tenths the fifth light and lights-out are indistinguishable, and a fast start reads as a fault.
