A century of lessons, woven in carbon

The A350 is what a century of aviation lessons looks like in one aircraft: a hull woven mostly from carbon fibre instead of riveted metal, wings that subtly reshape themselves in cruise, and two engines so efficient the aircraft can fly 18 hours nonstop. It burns about a quarter less fuel per seat than the aircraft it replaces — in an industry where a single percent is a triumph.

· WHY IT MATTERED

An airframe woven, not riveted

At 53% composite by weight, the A350’s fuselage and wings are largely carbon fibre — lighter than metal, immune to corrosion and fatigue cracking, and mouldable into aerodynamically ideal shapes. It also doesn’t mind humidity, so the cabin can be kept at a lower, more comfortable altitude.

Its Trent XWB engines move nine and a half kilograms of air around the core for every one through it — the bypass-ratio logic from the turbofan demo taken nearly to its practical limit. The result is the efficiency (and the near-silence) that lets two engines do what four used to.

The A350’s wing sweeps and morphs: flight computers deflect its control surfaces a few degrees in cruise to redistribute lift as fuel burns off, keeping drag near the optimum for hours at a time. It is the Spitfire’s lift-distribution lesson, replayed continuously by software.

Certified to fly up to 370 minutes from the nearest runway on one engine, the A350 can take essentially any route on Earth with two engines instead of four — the final blow to the 747 era. That trust is earned by engine reliability numbers unimaginable in earlier decades.
