The engine that taught the world to make things

The Model T’s engine was not powerful, advanced or beautiful — it was makeable, by the million. Four cylinders cast as a single cheap iron block under a detachable head, 20 horsepower at a lazy 1,600 rpm, cooled by water circulating on its own and fed by gravity. From 1908 to 1927 Ford built some fifteen million of them, and the tools and factories that made them became the template for making everything else.

· WHY IT MATTERED

One casting, four cylinders

Rivals machined cylinders one at a time and bolted them together. Casting all four as one block with a removable head made the engine drastically cheaper to build — and meant a farmer could lift the head with hand tools and scrape his own valves. Every mass-market engine since is cast en bloc.

Made by the million

The engine was designed around interchangeable parts and, from 1913, the moving assembly line: any piston fits any block, no hand-fitting, no craftsman. Precision became a property of the factory rather than the fitter — an idea that outlived the car by a century.

It ran on anything

Petrol stations barely existed in 1908, so the Model T stayed flexible: a driver-adjustable mixture knob on the dash and a gentle 4.5 : 1 compression ratio let it swallow petrol, paraffin or farm ethanol. No fuel pump — gravity; no water pump — thermosiphon. Fewer parts to break, anywhere on Earth.
