In 1955 Chevrolet packaged a 4.3-litre V8 into the size and price of an ordinary six: 162 horsepower, light, compact and endlessly tunable. More than a hundred million small-blocks later it is the most-produced V8 architecture in history — the default answer of American performance, and the source of the woofling idle every film reaches for when it wants a car to sound dangerous.
