The V8 for everyone

In 1955 Chevrolet packaged a 4.3-litre V8 into the size and price of an ordinary six: 162 horsepower, light, compact and endlessly tunable. More than a hundred million small-blocks later it is the most-produced V8 architecture in history — the default answer of American performance, and the source of the woofling idle every film reaches for when it wants a car to sound dangerous.

Eight in the space of six

Fold eight cylinders into two banks at 90° and they share one short, stiff crankshaft barely longer than a four’s. New thin-wall casting techniques made the block light and cheap to pour — a V8 stopped being a luxury item and became a tick-box on an ordinary family car.

One architecture, seventy years

The small-block kept its bore spacing from 1955 into the twenty-first century: heads, cranks and cams interchange across decades of production. That continuity built the entire hot-rodding culture — and means a crate small-block still bolts into a 1950s chassis today.

Why it burbles

The crossplane crank that makes a V8 silky also makes each bank of four fire unevenly — gaps of 90, 180, 270 and 180 degrees tumbling down each tailpipe. That syncopated exhaust rhythm IS the V8 burble. Racing V8s with flat-plane cranks fire evenly per bank and scream instead: the sound is the crankshaft, audible.
