· THE STORY

Balance, by symmetry

The Beetle’s engine was a 1.1-litre flat-four making 25 horsepower, designed in Ferdinand Porsche’s office to be cheap, light and unkillable. Its pistons lie flat and punch in opposition, so the engine largely balances itself; fins and a fan replace water, so nothing freezes in winter or boils in summer. It stayed in production for six decades and more than twenty-one million cars — and the same layout still howls behind every Porsche 911.

· WHY IT MATTERED

Pistons that cancel each other

Every piston’s lunge is met by its opposite twin lunging the other way, so the shaking forces cancel inside the block instead of buzzing the whole car. A boxer needs no balance shafts, and it lies flat — lowering the centre of gravity of everything it powers. What remains is only a gentle rocking couple, because the opposed pairs sit a rod-width apart.

No water, nothing to break

Cooling fins cast into the cylinders and one belt-driven fan replace the entire water system: no radiator, no hoses, no pump, no antifreeze. The cooling system cannot leak because it barely exists. That is what let Beetles cross deserts and Norwegian winters with equal indifference.

Six decades, twenty-one million

The last Beetle left the line in Mexico in 2003 with an engine its 1938 designer would recognise at a glance. And the idea outlived the car: Porsche stretched the same opposed layout into the 911’s flat-six, where the low, self-balanced engine is half the reason the car handles the way it does.
